Pat Murphy je dobitnica World Fantasy Award, Philip K. Dick Memorial Award, Nebula Award, Theodore Sturgeon Memorial Award i Isaac Asimov’s Science Fiction Magazine Readers’ Award. Živi i radi u San Franciscu, a kad ne piše SF, radi u Exploratoriumu, muzeju znanosti, umjetnosti i ljudske percepcije. Zajedno s Karen Joy Fowler, 1991. godine je osnovala James Tiptree, Jr. Award.

• “Rachel in Love”

It is a Sunday morning in summer and a small brown chimpanzee named Rachel sits on the living room floor of a remote ranch house on the edge of the Painted Desert. She is watching a Tarzan movie on television. Her hairy arms are wrapped around her knees and she rocks back and forth with suppressed excitement.

Live Oak Estates was a pleasant little townhouse development in a pleasant little California town. I lived there peacefully enough, until Joan Egypt moved in and everything changed.
I met Joan Egypt on a sunny autumn day. I had just pulled into my car port when I saw a moving van pulling away from the townhouse next door.

I went to see Wendy when I was in London. For old time’s sake. It’s a drag, but she expects it, and what can I do.
“Oh, Slightly, you really are a sight,” she says and smiles as if she expects me to share the joke. “You look so silly in that black leather jacket. And why do you have a hoop in your ear? Do you think you’re a pirate?”
