Uz popodnevnu kavicu

Just as mankind has created new, artificial chemical elements, so too is it possible for the human race to eventually create entirely new classes of worlds. Worlds that may stretch around planets or trap the energy output of entire stars. Worlds that may challenge the scale of the universe.
These new worlds are immense artifacts collectively known as megastructures.

I had read Ursula LeGuin’s “The Dispossessed”, taught it several times, and realized-the more I taught it-that it represented an extremely detailed and meticulous analysis of what a future anarchist world would entail, what benefits it might realistically hold, and what problems it might get into. Since then, I’ve been recommending the book to everyone I can think of; their response has been as enthusiastic as mine.

Iain Banks doesn’t have a passport. In 2003, he ripped it up and sent it to Tony Blair as a protest against the invasion of Iraq. “I’m waiting until the bad man’s gone, then I won’t feel ashamed to be British,” he jokes. The good news, he says, is that it gives him an excuse not to go on book tours abroad.
